The Internet and Education

I didn't use the internet in my education, I actually went to a library and used books and magazine articles for my research project, "Sugar and Hyperactivity in Children." I was teaching when the internet came into being and I have used it for many years and have searched and found zillions of great websites and kept current with articles and organizations pertaining to special education and anything else that struck my fancy. I have used websites like starfall.com and kidport.com with an s-video cable to my TV and the kids are able to see, hear, and interact with the program. I have taken my kids to a computer lab each day where they are allowed to surf the net and play games on websites like funbrain.com, primarygames.com., and kizclub.com.

In five years students will all have their own personal computers in the classroom where they will participate in creating presentations with information from the web, choosing what type of teaching methods they prefer, communicate with other children around the world, begin studying what they are interested in and explore what they will do in the future.

There should be a World Wide Education System where all people can access
the knowledge of the world from birth to 99 for free and get college credit for it.

I think every student having there own personal computer is something that needs to be done. It would open up so many opportunities, bring back creativity into our school system, and allow students to be more involved in there education.

Kate, I disagree with your ideas about starting computer access so early. However, I guess if it's monitored, then it's okay.

Kate, I personally support One Laptop Per Child 100%. It is my belief that children need the proper tools in order to push our world forward. But, I think we need to keep in mind what Barbara said. The Internet can be a scary place for kids. Some sort of academic monitoring/filtering system would be nice but at the same time implementing something like that destroys what the Internet really is. What is the middle ground we are looking for here?

I agree that there is a need for a personal computer for every child. Before this can even be in place we need to make the Internet far safer than it currently is. Even with the most advanced spam blockers and firewall protection, children and even adults are still largely susceptible to dangerous and even damaging content that is so frequently posted all over the Internet. In order for schools to make this a key in education, especially among the younger students, several new securities must be implemented. Over the next five years we will hopefully see a growth in these fields. It is not something that needs to be rushed. Keep in mind that the Internet has only been around for about two decades which means that it is still developing and still in its "experimental" stage.
